How Does the Allurion Balloon Work?

The Allurion balloon helps you lose weight by prolonging the time food stays in the stomach, making you feel full for longer periods. While the balloon remains in your stomach, it gives you the necessary time to develop healthy eating habits.

The Allurion gastric balloon is a capsule-shaped device that is swallowed with water, accompanied by a filling catheter. Once swallowed, an abdominal X-ray (radiograph) is taken to confirm the balloon’s position in the stomach. Your doctor then inflates the balloon, and the catheter is gently removed from the mouth. The entire procedure takes approximately 20 minutes.

The Allurion Weight Loss Program

The Allurion Weight Loss Program lasts for six months, with the balloon remaining in the stomach for four months. After this period, the balloon naturally deflates and is eliminated from the body. Even after the balloon is expelled, dietitian support continues, helping to maintain weight loss.

How Is the Allurion Swallowable Balloon Placement?

The Allurion Swallowable Balloon has several advantages over traditional intragastric balloons, primarily its ease of application.

However, many people still have questions about how the procedure is performed.

There is no endoscopy, no anesthesia, we swallow it with water. Everyone has learned these, but with the questions I receive, I thought it was necessary to give more information about the details of the procedure.

Where Can I Get the Swallowable Gastric Balloon?

One of the most frequently asked questions online is whether the Allurion Balloon can be purchased like a pill. It is important to note that the Allurion Swallowable Balloon is not a simple pill but a specially designed, compressed balloon that takes on a capsule form for easy swallowing. Although its shape resembles a pill, it is not something you can buy and use at home—it must be administered under medical supervision.

Is the Allurion Balloon Swallowed at a Hospital?

Yes, the swallowable gastric balloon procedure is performed in a hospital under the supervision of a specialist doctor. While the process is simple and comfortable, it is not as easy as just swallowing a pill and being done.

To ensure the patient can swallow the balloon, a test capsule of the same size is given with water first. If the patient successfully swallows this test capsule without difficulty, they can proceed with the real balloon, which comes attached to a catheter.

After swallowing, an abdominal X-ray confirms its position. The doctor then inflates the balloon, removes the catheter, and the procedure is complete—all within approximately 20 minutes.

Who Can Use the Allurion Intragastric Balloon?

Like all obesity treatments, the Allurion Gastric Balloon is suitable only for patients who meet the necessary medical criteria. Candidates must first undergo a medical evaluation to determine eligibility.

During this assessment, factors such as BMI, eating habits, medical history, and any conditions that might prevent the procedure are carefully examined. The ideal BMI range for this treatment is 27-35 kg/m².

Conditions That Prevent Procedure:

  • History of abdominal or pelvic surgery in the past 12 months (except for C-sections, diagnostic laparoscopy, laparoscopic appendectomy, and laparoscopic cholecystectomy)

  • Swallowing disorders or anatomical abnormalities affecting the esophagus

  • Pre-existing stomach conditions such as ulcers or severe gastritis

  • Cancer, inflammatory diseases, gastrointestinal bleeding, or other gastrointestinal conditions

  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding

  • Being under 18 years old

The Allurion Balloon is a revolutionary, non-invasive weight loss solution that offers significant advantages over traditional gastric balloons. With a painless, quick procedure and a comprehensive tracking system, it provides an effective and comfortable path to achieving your weight loss goals.

Allurion Swallowable Balloon FAQs

The Allurion Swallowable Intragastric Balloon is ideal for individuals with a Body Mass Index (BMI) between 27-40. While BMI is one of the most important criteria, it is not the sole determinant. In cases of excessive abdominal fat or comorbidities, the procedure may be performed even if the patient is not within the standard BMI range. Additionally, the Allurion Balloon is an ideal option for patients who are eligible for an intragastric balloon but cannot undergo anesthesia or prefer to avoid it.

The Allurion intragastric balloon is not suitable for individuals with swallowing difficulties or those who have undergone major abdominal surgery within the past year.

The Allurion balloon is compressed into a capsule form. While slightly larger than a regular pill, your doctor will assist you during swallowing. Some patients may experience slight difficulty or gagging during swallowing, which is completely normal. However, most patients manage to swallow the balloon without major difficulty. To date, no patient has had to abandon the procedure due to an inability to swallow the capsule.

Yes, when compared to standard six-month intragastric balloons, the Allurion balloon demonstrates similar effectiveness in weight loss.

Allurion Gastric Balloon procedure is performed by a doctor in a hospital, imaging center or a suitable clinic with an x-ray device. There may be people who find it strange that this question is included here, but as the doctor who performs the most Allurion balloon placements in Turkey*, I can say with peace of mind that it is one of the most frequently asked topics. “Do we swallow the swallowed gastric balloon ourselves at home?”, “Does the gastric balloon application need to be performed by a doctor?” and even “Where can I order a gastric balloon? Do you ship it by cargo?” We encountered hundreds of questions such as: Therefore, I would like to point out again that the gastric balloon capsule is not something you can swallow yourself at home

*Op Dr Erkam TÜLÜBAŞ According to the data of Allurion Technologies company, it has the highest number of Allurion Balloon applications in Turkey since 2020.

The Allurion Balloon eliminates the anesthesia-related risks associated with standard intragastric balloons. Some may wonder, “If there is no endoscopy, how do you ensure the balloon is in the correct position?” After swallowing the capsule, an X-ray is taken to confirm its location before inflation. A second X-ray is taken after inflation to ensure safety. This process significantly reduces risks compared to traditional intragastric balloons.

As with all intragastric balloons, patients may experience nausea, vomiting, or cramps during the initial adjustment period. However, these symptoms are typically milder and shorter in duration with the Allurion Balloon due to its softer and thinner design.

Dietitian support is crucial for all obesity treatments. The Allurion Balloon stays in the stomach for four months, but dietitian support continues for six months to ensure lasting healthy eating habits.

Around 16 weeks after ingestion, the balloon’s valve opens, allowing the contents to empty naturally. The deflated balloon is expelled through stool. Most patients do not notice the elimination process, while some only become aware upon seeing the expelled balloon. Unlike traditional balloons, this process prevents post-removal psychological concerns about regaining weight.

This is another advantage of the Allurion Gastric Balloon over standard gastric balloons. After the endoscopic balloons are removed from the stomach, patients say, “There is no balloon in my stomach anymore, I will gain weight again!” Fear arises, and with this anxiety, it is possible that they may experience psychological eating disorders again. In the swallowable gastric balloon, the patient, who does not realize that the balloon is expelled from the body, can easily continue their healthy diet  with the psychological comfort of having the balloon still in the stomach, and continue to lose weight after the balloon is expelled.

If necessary, the Allurion Balloon can be reapplied, as it does not alter the stomach’s physiology. However, we generally recommend waiting before undergoing a second procedure, as weight loss often continues even after the balloon is expelled.

Do I Need to Be Hospitalized After
Allurion Elipse Balloon Placement?

No. You can leave the hospital after gastric balloon application. This is one of the most important factors why the Allurion balloon is frequently preferred, especially by our patients coming from abroad. In addition, since the probability of side effects is very low compared to other gastric balloons, the time to be ready for air travel is also shorter. And of course, they don’t have to come back to remove the balloon when it expires. Considering these conveniences, the smartest alternative to lose 15-30 kg is the Allurion Gastric Balloon.

How to remove Allurion balloon?

Endoscopy is not required when inserting the Swallowed Gastric Balloon, and no procedure is required to remove it. The balloon remains in your stomach for approximately 4 months, and at the end of this period, the contents of the balloon are emptied spontaneously and the deflated balloon is removed from the body through excretion.

In other words, removing the balloon is as effortless and comfortable as inserting it.

Of course, the questions asked with the Allurion Gastric Balloon are not limited to these, but in order not to distract from the topic, we have included only application-related questions in this article. If you have any other questions about this method, which is widely preferred in the treatment of obesity, do not hesitate to let us know.

Additional Advantages of the Swallowable Intragastric Balloon

  • The balloon remains in the stomach for four months, making it easy to follow a diet plan. With exercise, weight loss of 25-30 kg is achievable.

  • The Allurion Balloon is 85% thinner and more flexible than silicone balloons, making it easy to swallow.

  • There have been zero reported balloon ruptures in over 15,000 applications.

  • The balloon is inflated up to 550 ml, the ideal volume for effective weight loss without unnecessary side effects.

The Allurion Gastric Balloon stays in your stomach for 4 months and you follow your diet in the area during this time. It is possible to maintain weight loss of up to 25-30 kg if you do not have a gap with exercise. For other gastric balloons, the time it takes to remove the balloon varies between 6 months and 1 year, depending on the type. According to the procedures performed, 80% of the total weight loss occurs in the first 3 months of the balloon procedure, and it has been observed that the balloon makes a significant contribution to the total weight after 4 months. That’s why the Allurion Balloon stays in your stomach for 4 months, and then the contents of the balloon are opened and emptied, and the balloon naturally dissolves on its own.

Allurion Gastric Balloon is 85% thinner and more flexible than silicone gastric balloons. Thus, it is packed into a capsule like a pill. For this reason, it is also known as the “Gastric Balloon Pill” among the public. Due to its extremely solid structure, the risk of puncture is almost non-existent.

The balloon is inflated up to 550 ML. Studies have shown that balloons with a volume of 550 ML support ideal weight loss, but inflating them above 550 ML does not provide a significant additional weight loss. A thin and flexible balloon inflated to the ideal size means less bloating and less likelihood of experiencing discomfort such as nausea and cramps compared to other balloons.
